The son of FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Saif Ben Sulayem, has died in a road accident.

Media in Dubai, where Ben Sulayem is from, reported the death on Tuesday evening before an FIA spokesperson confirmed the news.

Like his father, he took part in racing competition as he previously competed in the Formula 4 UAE championship, which was launched in 2016.

He took to the track against drivers such as Oscar Piastri and Logan Sargeant, who made their F1 debuts at the Bahrain Grand Prix last weekend.

Ben Sulayem senior has vast experience in rally competition, winning the Middle East rally championship 14 times.

In 2021, he was elected as the president of the FIA, taking over duties from Jean Todt who had served the maximum three terms.

Prior to the start of the 2023 F1 season, Ben Sulayem took a step back from the day-to-day running of the series.

Instead, the duties were handed to Nicolas Tombazis. Despite the relinquishment of responsibilities, Ben Sulayem was present at the season-opening race in Bahrain.
